Micromax Yu Yureka Review

Micromax Yu Yureka

Yu Yureka

Micromax Mobile, one of India’s leading mobile phone manufacturers, recently launched a new sub-brand called YU in partnership with Cyanogen Inc. The first phone from this brand is the Yureka, which was recently announced and launched exclusively on Amazon India.Micromax is Indias top domestic smartphone vendor and has plenty of popular products on offer. Even so, it has a bit of a reputation for selling low-quality products and it knows that there are people who would simply never consider a Micromax phone over, say, a Samsung or a Sony. There are also dozens of other companies with very similar products, and any of them could easily become as successful. They wanted to regain there fame so they partnership with YU Televentures. As a result they launched Yureka priced at  Rs 8,999, it is one of the most competitively priced smartphones available in the India market. Our review.

Our Review

Micromax phones are not exactly popular for their build quality. The YU Yureka tries to be a bit different from the regular Micromax phone you may have seen. The 5.5-inch IPS panel display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, is complemented by what appears to be Micromax’s attempt at aping OnePlus One’s sandstone finish rear cover.Despite being so big, it deserves applause due to its thickness of just 8.5mm.The phone has a removable back panel that has slightly rounded edges and a soft matte finish. Sandwiched between the two panels of the Yureka, there is a 64-bit 1.5GHz octa-core processor based on Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 processor which utilizes the capabilities of the phone efficiently and guarantees powerful performance. It is aided by a 2GB DDR3 RAM for smooth multitasking. Rich graphics is ensured by Adreno 305 GPU.The main attraction of the handset is the Cyanogen OS 11 platform, a modified version of Android v4.4.4 KitKat OS. Micromax promises to give timely OTA updates with the update to the latest Android v5.0 Lollipop expected soon. The CyanogenMod allows you to tinker with the platform according to your needs without worrying about the warranty. The Yureka has a 13 megapixel camera on the back and a 5 megapixel camera on the front. With a 13 megapixel sensor I was expecting some decent quality but unfortunately, that wasn’t quite the case. The daylight images were passable, with acceptable level of detail but with noticeable sharpening and noise reduction, not to mention the occasional purple fringing around high contrast areas. There is also an HDR mode, but it wasn’t as effective as one would expect and mostly just increases the saturation levels and purple fringing in the image.YU comes with a 2500mAh battery and the results were mixed, especially if you turn on full brightness and keep 3G data on.With moderate to high usage, including about one to two hours of making calls, playing games, clicking some pictures, listening to music and browsing the web, the phone will last you a full working day (11 to 12 hours with 1-2 hours screen on time) even if you put the screen brightness at the maximum level and keep 3G turned on.The Yu Yureka has a lot going for it, and even its minor flaws can be overlooked considering the amazingly low price. Yu has identified its target audience well and has delivered a very, very attractive product.
