Toshiba releases ultra thin 20MP CMOS image sensor for high end smartphones

Toshiba released a brand new 20MP CMOS image sensor, designed specifically with high-end mobile devices in mind. Sporting the rather uninspiring model number T4KA7, the 1.12 micron component will allow the development of sub-6mm camera modules.
Toshiba T4KA7 has an optical size of 1/2.4” and features high-speed circuit technology that allows it to deliver 22fps at full resolution image capture. The aforementioned result represents an 83% improvement over Toshiba’s previous 20MP sensor.

The T4KA7 sensor has a pixel count of 5384 x 3752 pixels. Its advanced digital zoom capability prevents image quality deterioration even at high focal lengths.
Samples of the T4KA7 image sensor began shipping to Toshiba partners last month, priced at a tad under $20. Mass production of the component is expected to kick off in February 2015, so we can reasonably expect to see the T4KA7 in devices at some point in the middle of next year.

Sony 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector

Sony’s most peculiar and most exciting announcement this year was the Ultra Short Throw 4k Projector. Due to the surprisingly short distance the projector sits from the wall and the incredibly sharp picture, this 4k projector feels like the future of not only projectors—but TVs as a whole.

ARM Cortex A72 capture video 4K to 120 fps and Ultra HD slow motion

ARM

During the last week, ARM heart formalized its new Cortex A72. Apart from the many opportunities offered by the next generation’s processors that will be equipped, it is one that should be widely highlighted by manufacturers: 4K video capture at 120 fps.

Inaugurated by the Galaxy Note 3, launched in autumn 2013, and since then taken over by the most senior class of 2014, 4K video capture was one of many innovations put forward last year by the manufacturers. However, for now, it is still limited to 30 frames per second and it is hardly possible to shoot for more than 5 minutes without causing overheating of the unit.

With the new ARM Cortex A72, probably expected in the future processors Snapdragon 618 and 620 from Qualcomm and its VPU Mali-V550, it will be possible to shoot Ultra HD at a rate of 120 frames per second. In other words, it will also be possible to create slow motion in 4K, slowing up to five times (at 24 fps) the speed of the video.

If this type of functionality remains accessory for the average user, the Ultra HD video capture has nevertheless established itself last year in the image sensors of our smartphones and it will probably even next year with the 4K to 120 fps.

At present, when it comes to film at 120 frames per second, Android smartphones are still limited to HD 720p resolution. Once in Full HD video capture, it then goes to 60 frames per second. The video can then be slowed up twice. So this is a major breakthrough that is preparing the side of the mobile video capture.
