How to avoid big international iPhone data charges

Taking an iPhone on an international trip can be a harrowing experience. Every time you post a status update to Twitter or check your email, you imagine your wireless carrier charging you a fortune in international data roaming fees.

But there are ways to stay connected while youre traveling without freaking out about the cost. Taking advantage of some new features in iOS 7 and following a few savvy data-roaming strategies can ensure that at least that aspect of your trip is worry-free.

Close the data spigot
Turn off Roaming and youll use no data at all.

The most important iPhone setting when you travel internationally is found in the Settings app, in the Cellular section: Data Roaming. Turn this switch off, and when you leave the country, your iPhone will just stop using data entirely, even when it’s on the local phone network.

But that’s a real all-or-nothing proposition. You’ll still be able to get phone calls and texts, and youll get data whenever youre on a Wi-Fi network. But your iPhone will never transmit or receive data on the local cellular network. You’ll be free from data charges, but you’ll also be free from data.

Use the Cellular portion of the Settings
app to restrict which apps can use
data and to monitor their usage.
Fortunately, in iOS 7 there’s a way to control the data spigot app by app. Scroll down through the Cellular section of Settings and you’ll find the Use Cellular Data For section. From here, you can turn off Internet access to individual apps. If you’re traveling internationally and just want to, say, load Google Maps data without every other app on your phone generating hundreds of dollars worth of roaming charges, you can say so on this screen: Just turn off the switch for every single app except the one(s) you want to use.

Even better, in this same section, underneath each app, you’ll see the amount of data it uses when you’re on a cellular connection. If you want to carefully monitor your usage while you’re out of the country, scroll down to the bottom of the Cellular section and tap Reset Statistics. Now you’ll be able to see exactly how much data you’re using while you’re gone.

Talk to your carrier

Before you leave the country, talk to your wireless carrier (or visit its website) to see what international plans it offers. It may be cheapest and easiest to buy a very small amount of (expensive) international data rather than paying roaming fees, especially if you’re going to severely limit your data usage or if you’re only going to be out of the country for a few days.

If you’re an AT&T customer, you may also want to ask about unlocking your phone. If your phone is more than two years old (or if you have an older iPhone laying around), you can ask AT&T to unlock its SIM-card slot. If you do so, you can then pop out your iPhone’s identity card when traveling overseas and replace it with one from the country you’re traveling to—and save a bundle on data in the process. (More on this in a little bit.)

If you’re a Verizon or Sprint customer, you’re in luck. Your iPhone has a card slot, but in all likelihood that slot is already unlocked. (If you’re not sure, call your carrier and ask.)

Buy a prepaid SIM card

For €20, I had unlimited data for a week.
Most of us have gotten used to having freely available Internet access in our pockets all the time. It’s disconcerting when it’s not there. To keep using the Internet in the way you’re accustomed, seek out a local cellular provider once you arrive in your destination country, and buy a pre-paid SIM card. (And make sure they’ve got the right size of card for your iPhone; newer iPhones use nano-SIMs, while older models use micro-SIMs.)

When I recently went to Ireland, I visited a Three store and bought a prepaid card for €20. I was in and out of the store in five minutes, about half an hour later my iPhone was on the local 3G network, and I had unlimited 3G data for my entire stay. I was shocked at how easy the entire process was.

Offers differ from country to country, so it’s worth doing a little research before you travel. I was able to identify the right carrier, the right deal, and even the location of the store I needed to go to before I had even left the States.

Keep in mind, for this to work your iPhone needs to have an unlocked SIM slot. I used a Verizon iPhone 5 and it worked just fine, and it worked in an unlocked iPhone 5s as well. Also, once you switch SIM cards, you won’t be able to receive calls at your old phone number until you switch back: Your phone will have a new, local phone number. (Internet-based stuff like iMessage and email will all still work as normal, it’s just your phone number that will have changed.)

I only ran into one problem with this approach: I tried to log into my Facebook account, and it detected that I was logging in from an unusual location (Ireland). It wanted to do a two-factor authentication to verify who I was, by sending a text to my U.S. cellphone number. For that to work, I’d need to switch back to my old U.S. SIM card.

If your iPhone’s not unlocked

If you’re on AT&T and your phone’s not at least two years old, you can’t buy a prepaid SIM card. Do you have a cellular-enabled iPad or (even better) iPad mini? Those devices are already SIM unlocked, so they should be able to accept a local SIM card just as easily as your phone. Toting an iPad mini around foreign streets might seem a little silly, but it could be a nice workaround if there’s just no other way. You could also consider buying or renting a portable Wi-Fi router that connects to the local broadband network—stick it in your pocket and connect your U.S. devices on Wi-Fi.

If you’re planning on traveling internationally in the future, you might want to consider holding on to your old iPhone when you buy a new one, and having your carrier unlock it. If you travel a lot, consider buying an unlocked model or using Verizon or Sprint. My wife’s former boss splits the year between the U.S. and New Zealand, so she bought a Verizon iPhone 5 and uses a local New Zealand SIM card when she’s down there. It works perfectly.

Travel safe

This should all work better than it does. At least T-Mobile is making some strides in this area, offering free 2G international data to its customers. For the time being, carriers seem content to overcharge international travelers for data, so it’s up to the savvy traveler to find ways to cut costs. If you’re using your existing carrier’s roaming plan, turn off data access for all but the most vital apps and turn off data entirely when you don’t need it. If you want to roam free, buy a prepaid SIM card from a local carrier and stop stressing out.

WhatsApp How to Stop Auto Downloading and Saving of Photos

WhatsApp is the worlds most popular messaging app, with over 600 million active users. One of the most common annoyances with the app is that it automatically downloads media files (photos and audio) by default. WhatsApp says this is optimised for best performance, but when friends decide to send a dozen pictures of their dinner to everyone they know, it is optimised for maximum annoyance instead. Heres how you can stop WhatsApp from automatically saving photos and audio on your phone.
(Also see: How to Block a Contact on WhatsApp)
Android
WhatsApp for Android has a switch that lets you stop images and videos from downloading. Heres how you can do it:

1. Open WhatsApp, make sure you are seeing the main window - where all your chats are displayed. Tap the three vertical dots on the top right > Settings.
2. Now tap Chat settings > Media auto-download. Youll see three options: When using cellular data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming. Tap each one and disable auto-downloads by unchecking all three options - Images, Audio and Video.
To view photos, you will have to download them. When you do, WhatsApp saves them in a folder, and you can get inundated with stupid memes and other unwanted content, which is visible to anyone who opens your phones Gallery App. However, it is possible to stop these photos from appearing in the Gallery app. Heres how:
1. Download Quickpic and open the app.
2. Navigate to the WhatsApp media folders. The location of the WhatsApp folder varies across devices but it should typically be the following: Internal Storage (sometimes labelled sdcard0) > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Images, > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Audio, and WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Videos.
3. Long-press the WhatsApp Images folder and make sure that it is selected. Do the same with the WhatsApp Video and WhatsApp Audio folders.
4. After selecting the three folders, tap the three dots icon on the top-right > Hide. This will ensure that the Gallery app doesnt show them. You can still view these images and videos within WhatsApp and through any apps that let you view hidden folders. But if you pass your phone to someone, you no longer need worry about them seeing the WhatsApp photos and videos through the Gallery app.

(Also see: How to Hide Last Seen on WhatsApp)
iPhone
WhatsApp for iPhone has an easy way to stop automatically saving photos to the Camera Roll. Heres what you can do:

1. Open WhatsApp and tap the Settings button at the bottom-right.
2. Go to Chat settings > Save incoming media > Off.
This stops the pictures people are sending from showing up in the camera roll, and taking over your synced Photo Stream. Unfortunately, theres no way to stop WhatsApp from auto-downloading photos on your iPhone. It will ask you whether you want to download videos, but photos are saved automatically.
WhatsApp_iPhone_auto_download.jpg
BlackBerry
Whether you are using BlackBerry 7 or BlackBerry 10, disabling auto-downloads needs to be done through the Settings app. Follow these steps if you are using WhatsApp on any BlackBerry device:

1. Head to Settings > Media settings > Media auto-download.
2. Now select When using cellular data and uncheck all three options - Images, Audio and Video. Go back and follow the same steps with "When connected on Wi-Fi" and "When roaming".
3. In Media Settings, you can also tap "Save media on" to decide if the media is saved on your phones internal memory, or on your microSD card (if present).
Windows Phone
Windows Phone users need to follow these steps:

1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three horizontal dots at the bottom of the main window (recent chats). Now tap settings > chat settings > media auto-download.
2. Now tap Images and select Never. Do the same for Video and Audio. Other options include auto-download on WiFi, cellular and roaming. But if you select Never, you will be able to download media only when you want to.
Nokia S40 and S60
If you use WhatsApp on Nokia S40 feature phones, you can enable or disable media downloads through this setting:

1. Open Options > Settings > Network > Auto-download images. Here you can disable auto-downloads.
It is almost exactly the same on Nokia S60 phones as well:
1. Open Options > Settings > Network > Media auto-download. Now select Cellular and disable auto-downloads for media. Do the same with WiFi and Roaming.
Not saving images automatically has its advantages, but it also means that you will have to download each photo manually. If you end up downloading each and every image anyway, then its probably best to leave this feature active. Let us know if this tutorial helped you via the comments. How Telecommunication Company In Nigeria Defraud Non Blackberry Users

It is nothing short of day light robbery that have been happening to Nigerians. Telecommunications industry have decided to favor a set of smartphone users (Blackberry) why robbing other smartphone users (Nokia, iPhone, and Android devices). It is almost like saying its favoritism, serious neglect and siphoning.

The telecommunications company do this by giving Blackberry users more internet data size compared to other smartphone users.

For example, a BIS subscription of N1000 gets you a minimum of 1GB internet data while the same amount wont even get you 300mb of data.  This is true for all network operators in the country.

The question is, Why is there such a data bundle gap between Blackberry users and non Blackberry users?  Is it that they have more customer base than other smartphone users? Is it that Blackberry users  are more important to them than  non-Blackberry users?
Considering the fact that most non-Blackberry smartphones even consume more Internet data than Blackberry devices, is this a way to keep giving little data so that these people can keep subscribing to tiny internet packages that wont last up to two weeks?

Obviously, this more than meet the eye! Its robbery and rip off of the highest order.

According to a document published online by Punch Nigeria on January 8th 2013 which you can find here, only 25 per cent of Nigeria’s over 105 million mobile telephone subscribers use smartphones. Going by this value, 25 percent when converted to actual numbers is translated to 26.25 million smartphones.

The study further exposed that 59% of Nigerians use phones with basic features and 16% use phones with advance features.

According to another online publication by Business Day on January 24th 2012 which you can also find here, Information  from senior personnel inside Nigeria ’s GSM industry  show that  there were about about 2.4  million Blackberry devices in the country’s four GSM networks MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat, as at December 2011.  This is up from about 925,000  about a year ago.

At the time of this writing, hypothetically, its possible to say that this value of 2.4 million Blackberry devices in the country would have increased to about say 4 - 6 million.

Now, 4 - 6 million Blackberry devices is still a far cry from 26.25 million smartphones in Nigeria. This suggests that there are more smartphones that are not Blackberry in hooked to telecoms companies in Nigeria.

According to a report from BGR, 3% of Blackberry users globally are Nigerians. Definitely, Blackberry would do everything in their power to keeps these user base from declining by doing a lot of things.
Being that as it may, could it be that Blackberry is subsidizing Internet rate that makes it so cheap in Nigeria with more data or its just a decision that telecoms companies in Nigeria decided to take on to keep more customers to the Blackberry platform?

Either way, this activity is not favorable to non-Blackberry users as we they also make a huge amount of their customer base too. In fact as someone said, Telecommunications company in Nigeria are defrauding non-Blackberry users.

I would like these telecoms companies in Nigeria to look into this matter and do something about it before it gets critical; because right now, a whole lot of people are complaining about the seeming increase of Internet data rates with tiny data bundle that reduces productivity and also have impact on the growth and adoption of other smartphones: Nokia Lumia, Samsung, HTC, Tecno and the likes in the country.

Of course, I dont have all these answers to all these, however, if you do share your opinions and thoughts in the comments section below
