Prices On The Black Market For Gold iPhones Are Completely Insane

gold iphone 5s

Apples inability to supply the insane demand for the new gold iPhone 5S has created a second-hand iPhone price bubble on eBay and a black market of gold iPhone scalpers in China.

One gold iPhone just sold on eBay for $10,100.

Its not clear why Apple cant give everyone who wants one a gold iPhone. Officially, online orders with Apple wont be fulfilled until October. We noted over the weekend that the gold iPhone  never actually existed in some stores, countries, and among some wireless carriers. The flagship Apple Store in San Francisco, for instance, only ever had 20 gold iPhones.

With the gold iPhone completely unavailable to ordinary consumers minutes after it went on sale, some have turned to eBay, where gold iPhones are selling for as much as $4,600 at the time of writing (pack of three). Thats the highest ask, but in active auctions gold iPhones are seeing brisk bidding all the way up to $2,247. One single gold iPhone eventually sold for a staggering $10,100.

In China, a gold iPhone on the "gray market" will cost you the equivalent of $1,634, about twice the price of retail. Scalpers were buying gold iPhones in Hong Kong on the day of sale for US$1,161, still more than the $721 original price tag.

Lastly, a company called Gold Genie is selling a real gold-plated version of the iPhone starting at $2,850. An actual iPhone 5S isnt actually gold, of course. Its colored aluminum. Gold Genies version is actual gold plate:

LG Tribute Premium style on a budget

Few phones are inexpensive without being cheap, but the LG Tribute from Virgin Mobile is one of them. This $80 phone not only has a sturdy and stylish exterior, its also armed with a speedy processor, Android 4.4.2 KitKat and a capable camera.

LG Tribute

Whats lacking here is size; the phone has a small 4.5-inch screen thats a bit of an anomaly in todays market. But for its low price, Im not disappointed by the petite display.

The Tribute was released alongside Virgin Mobiles new Unlimited prepaid plans, which get you unlimited talk, text and data for $35, $45 or $55 per month, depend on which data level you pick. If you reach your data limit, Virgin Mobile will throttle your data speeds, but you wont be charged for any extra mega- or gigabytes.

Design

Compared to todays pocket-busting smartphones, the Tribute is on the small side. Its just 5.02 inches tall, 2.67 inches wide and 0.42 deep (127.5mm by 67.8mm by 10.6mm), compact enough to slip into any pocket and easy to wrap my smaller hands around it. Weighing 4.90 ounces (138.9 grams), its a bit heavy for its size, but the heft makes the phone feel sturdy and more premium that it really is.

The Tribute has a simple, rounded rectangle design, similar to the LG Nexus 5. It has an all-black front bezel and matte white battery cover and the two colors meet on the edge, creating a nice effect. The front of the phone is mostly empty, with just an earpiece, front-facing camera lens and light sensor. The only two buttons are on the side; a power/lock button on the right edge and a short volume rocker on the left.

On the back, theres the main camera, flash, and small grill for the speaker. Though I like that the battery door wraps around the sides of the Tribute and sits snug against the phone, that makes it difficult to remove the cover to get to the SD card, SIM card and battery. You need to wedge your fingernail under the cover near the microUSB port to pop it off. Luckily, the SD card slot is separate from the battery, which means you can install a card or swap it with the phone on, which is helpful.

Theres a 4.5-inch, 800x480 pixel WVGA screen which isnt remarkable sharp, but not fuzzy either. On paper, the screen doesnt sound all that impressive, especially when you compare it to higher-end smartphones, but in person, it looks vibrant and clear. The colors are rich and natural. The screens easy to view in direct sunlight, especially at full brightness.

The screens biggest hindrance is that its paired-down size makes websites feel a bit cramped and some apps dont fill the screen quite right, meaning some buttons might look cut off or smashed together.

Software features

The Tribute is running Android 4.4.2 KitKat and has LGs custom UI that youll also find on the higher-end LG G3. Its a simple, yet sophisticated design that goes a long way to making the phone feel much more expensive than it really is.

You can customize your home screen layout with a handy grid that appears when you press and hold the screen, and you can change the animated transitions when you scroll between home screens. There are also several fun animations throughout the phone, such as when you remove an app from a home screen or when you uninstall it. These small touches make the phone more memorable and interesting than other available budget Android phones.

Like the G3, the Tribute lets you set a Knock Code to unlock the device, instead of entering a password or PIN. You just tap the screen in a unique pattern to unlock it. The phone also has gesture controls, so that you can flip the phone over to silence incoming calls, snooze the alarm, or pause a video. I like that LG put the some of the same care into this budget device that it does for its higher-end models.

Virgin Mobile loaded up the phone with several apps, including browser add-on Lumen Toolbar, security app Gadget Guardian from Lookout, and Virgin Mobiles My Account app. Unfortunately, the app is also loaded with several shortcuts to apps in Google Play that youll want to remove because they just clutter the screen.

Camera and video

A 5-megapixel rear camera handles most of your shots, and theres also a VGA front facing camera for selfies or video chatting.

What stood out to me immediately is that the camera app has a minimal setup by default, with very few on-screen controls are the default. Theres not even a shutter button, instead you just tap the screen to take the picture. If youd rather have more controls, tap the three vertical dots to bring up more options, including the shutter button and camera settings.

Along with the typical scene settings and filters, the camera has many extra features, including panorama mode and Cheese Shutter, which takes a photo with a voice command. You can also use a hand gesture to take a selfie; you just hold your hand up and then make a fist when youre ready for the camera.

In my testing, the camera produced good, but not stellar photos. It struggled to pick up fine details, and occasionally made shadows overly dark, but overall it performed well.

The camera can capture 1080p video and the video I shot with the Tribute looked sharp and picked up fine details a bit better than in photos. There were still a few lighting issues, mostly that any dark or shaded areas looked overly dark. You can also capture still shots while recording video with Live Shot, a handy feature.

Call quality

I tested the Tribute on Virgin Mobiles network in San Francisco, and I was impressed with what I heard. In my test calls, voices on both ends sounded clear and natural, with very little distortion and no static.

Occasionally, my testing partner sounded a bit muffled, but I could still hear her just fine. The phone did a good job of reducing any background noise, even outside next to a busy street.

On speakerphone, my testing partner said I sounded clearest when I held the microphone close to my mouth, but that when I moved it farther away, it was still easy to hear me. On my end, her voice was crisp, natural and loud, without getting distorted even at the highest volume. Unfortunately, that speaker didnt perform as well when playing music or videos, as it sounded harsh and distorted at high volumes.

Performance: Processor, data, and battery

Inside, the Tribute has a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM, both which keep the phone snappy and responsive. I did notice some occasional lag when opening apps and menus, but it didnt detract too much from the overall experience.

Likewise, the Tribute handled games well, with almost zero lag or dropped frames. Just a note that I wasnt able to run a Quadrant test on the Tribute because the phone asked me to turn of any network connection to run a benchmark app, and the Quadrant Standard app needs an Internet connection to calculate the results.

Theres 4GB of internal storage for apps, photos and files, and if you need more space, you can use an SD card to add up to 32GB. If you plan to install a lot of apps or snap a lot of photos, youll want to get an SD card, because 4GB can fill up quickly.

LG says the removable 2,100mAh battery is offers up to 15 hours of talk time, and I found that the phone lasted a full day without a charge while checking email, playing games, and making a few phone calls. I can see it lasting a full day with moderate use, but if youll spend a lot of time on your phone, playing performance-hogging games, you might need to top off the battery.

The phone runs on Virgin Mobiles CDMA network and gets 4G LTE data speeds via Sprints Spark 4G LTE service. In my tests, browsing the Internet was fast, as was downloading apps. Streaming video loaded quickly in HD and played without any buffering. While the LTE speeds are great, I could do without the sun-like Spark logo in the status bar that spins frequently.

Should you buy it?

LGs Tribute impressed me from the moment I took it out of the box. Its modern design gives it a premium feel, while the internal guts come together to create a deft phone that handles everyday tasks well and the snappy LTE data speeds give you a fast experience when browsing the Web and cruising your social networks.

The Tribute is a budget phone done right, thanks to its polished design and solid specs. For $80, you dont have much to lose and you could do much worse on Virgin Mobile.

Bono makes an apology for the automatic U2 album download on iTunes

U2 members did a Facebook interview recently answering fan questions and inevitably, they were asked not to ever do another iTunes automatic album deal. The fan asking the question described it as “rude”, which really ticked the members. However, after that Bono went on to apologist on behalf of the group.

The band’s front man said he was sorry and that U2 got “carried away” as they were concerned that the music they’ve poured years of hard work into might remain unheard. Still, the $100 million deal between Apple and U2 is unlikely to drop.

U2′s latest album Songs of Innocence was downloaded automatically by every iTunes user following the update to iOS 8. The album reached 81 million users, many of which were angry at Apple for not giving them a choice whether to download it or not and the company had to create a special tool for removing it.

NVIDIA announces GTX 980 and GTX 970 based on the new Maxwell architecture

NVIDIA has announced two new graphics cards for the PC, the flagship single-GPU GTX 980 and the mid-range GTX 970. Both are based on NVIDIA’s 10th generation Maxwell architecture, which succeeds Kepler.
Other than being more powerful, the two new graphics cards also introduce some new technologies from NVIDIA, including Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI), which enables real-time global illumination. This enables the light to reflect off surfaces more naturally, and the resultant illumination is more realistic and accurate.

There’s also MFAA, or Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing, which is a more efficient form of traditional Multisample Anti-Aliasing. NVIDIA claims it offers the image quality of 4X MSAA at the performance of 2x MSAA.
Another new feature is Dynamic Super Resolution, which is generally known as supersampling. What this feature does is it renders the game at a higher resolution than your monitor. So if you have a 1080p monitor, the graphics card will render the game at 4K or higher and then downsample it down to fit your screen. The resultant image is cleaner and has less aliasing. This is sometimes present in games and available as SSAA or FSAA options within anti-aliasing settings but in this case, NVIDIA is doing it within its own GeForce Experience software rather than letting the game do it, assuming the game has the option.
There are also improvements to cater to VR applications, such as VR SLI where you can assign multiple GPUs for a specific eye, asynchronous warp that reduces latency in half, and auto stereo, which improves game compatibility with devices such as Oculus Rift.
The GTX 980 and GTX 970 will be available from various hardware partners, including ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY and Zotac. The prices start at $549 for the GTX 980 and $329 for the GTX 970.

Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3 hands on review

Side by side on a table, the two nearly identical rectangular handsets look innocuous enough and extremely familiar. Yet two things quietly make the Samsung Galaxy A3 and Samsung Galaxy A5 stand out: their all-aluminum material and their unibody construction. Following the metal-framed (and plastic-backed) Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 represent Samsungs first stab at an all-metal build, and the first of its smartphones to seal in the battery completely.

The square-sided handsets look and feel good, similar to Galaxy Alpha, or like smaller, more maneuverable versions of the Note 4. Theyre also on the light side and are noticeably slim - in fact, theyre the most svelte Galaxy phones yet. Dont look for any real standout textures or design elements to show off the move to metal; these smooth-backed specimens are understated as far as that goes.

Since the back cover isnt removable, youll find the SIM-card and microSD-card slots on the right edge. In some countries, a hybrid slot will accommodate either a second SIM or a storage card, just not both at the same time. As midrange phones, you wont find a heart-rate monitor built in with the camera module; Samsung says that sensor is reserved for more premium phones like the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, and Galaxy Alpha.

Midrange specs

You might think that luxe metal casings like these would house equally high-end specs, but the A series is actually defined by midrange specs that target a more youthful demographic. Samsungs market studies revealed that this group isnt fussy about top-flight hardware, but is turning toward the metal trend in a serious way.

Samsung also points out that the Galaxy A5 ad Galaxy A3 emphasize sound quality, with adjustable audio that increases volume when it detects competing background noise. Another feature, called Wise Voice, helps keep volume levels constant for the receiver even if youre holding the phone away from your face. Sounds good in theory, though I didnt get a chance to test out either enhancement.

In terms of color, both the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 will come in six shades. Theres the usual black and white, gold and silver metallics, and the same blossom pink and light blue as the Note 4. As usual, not every color will be available in every country.

Extra themes

Android 4.4 KitKat is the OS standard for these phones, with Samsungs TouchWiz interface on top. In a nod to self-expression, a new take on the UI lets you apply four new themes -- such as "nature" -- that applies pre-selected images and ringtones. The Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 also have their own unique touch sounds that other Galaxy phones dont.

Supercharged selfies

The Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 may fall in the middle of the hardware spectrum, but they have a few fun new camera features dedicated to selfies, another huge trend were seeing in smartphones.

It all starts with wide-angle selfies that shoot up to 100 degrees in portrait and a 120-degree landscape/panorama mode. The Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 also get the same rear-camera selfie feature first seen on the Note 4. In addition, the airbrushing Beauty mode found in pretty much every Samsung and LG front-facing camera goes a step further here with effects to correct your skin tone and slim your face, plus one to enlarge your eyes. If you prefer to send your selfies au naturel, youll have the option to turn this off.

You can trigger selfies with a voice prompt as before, and Samsung also adds the ability to launch a count-down by holding your hand in front of the camera. Youll have 3 seconds to get your palm out of the way before the shutter snaps to life.

Also brand-new is an animated GIF mode, which combines up to 20 pictures you capture by pressing and holding the shutter button. You can adjust the frame rate for 1-to-10 frames per second, and also tweak the GIF quality using a sliding scale. Youll also be able to reorder frames and adjust the settings before saving your animated GIF.

Its a cute idea, but one thats clearly still in its infancy. Quality on my GIF was choppy in my hands-on demo, and thats because it caps off at a 640x480-pixel video resolution. Sharing is also limited. While animated GIFS are shareable through a messaging app, it wasnt clear if you could upload them to social networks like Facebook.

Where can I get Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3, and for how much?

The Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 will launch in Asia first in November (including China), followed by rest of the world. While Samsung hasnt released pricing or distribution details yet (carriers will likely do that on their own), look for costs of unlocked models to come in significantly lower than the Note 4.

Outlook

Once again, Samsungs approach of aiming its first fully metal devices to the middle of the market rather than the tippy-top is a different strategy than Id have expected from the smartphone leader. It isnt an unreasonable position, however. Appearances matter, and with midrange specs largely on par with competing devices, the more premium metal may very well help the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 stand out against rival phones.

Top 5 Fastest Planes on Earth

Since the Wright brothers invented the airplanes, the aviation industry has come far way. More than 100 years has been passed since that day. Today due to the advanced technology and our capable engineers, the planes can fly much higher with lightning speed that even the Wright brothers would never had imagined.

Here we have enlisted the top 5 fastest planes in the world. Check-out these enthralling videos.

5. Bell X-2 "Starbuster"

The Bell X-2 was jointly developed by Bell aircraft corporation, the U.S. Air force and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1945. It was a rocket-powered research plane built to investigate aerodynamic issues regarding supersonic speed within the range of Mach 2 to Mach 3.

The X-2 completed its first successful powered flight in 1955. In the next, the planes control was in the hands of Captain Milburn Apt when X-2 reached Mach 3.2 (2094 mph, or 3370 km/h), at an altitude of 65,000 feets. After achieving the top speed, Apt tried to slow it down, but the plane was still moving at Mach 3. The plane lost control and an attempt to recover from the spin failed. This tragic accident ended the X-2 program.

4. MiG-25 Foxbat

The Mig-25 Foxbat was designed to intercept enemy planes at hyper speed to collect reconnaissance data. This plane is listed among the fastest planes on earth till date. Its first flight was made in 1964 and it was used by Soviet Air Defence Forces in 1970.

The plane has incredible top-notch speed of Mach 3.2 (2,190 mph, or 3524 km/h), and it is still used in limited service by Russian Airforce and other nations like Algerian Airforce, Syrian Airforce.

3. Lockheed YF-12

The Lockheed YF-12, developed by Lockheed Corporation during early 1950s and 1960s was a prototype two person aircraft built to intercept the enemy aircraft at Mach 3 speed. The Testing of YF-12 was carried in Area 51, the top secret test and training facility in a remote location of Nevada.

The Lockheed YF-12 have reported to attain the top speed of Mach 3.2 (2070 mph, 3330 km/h) at an altitude of 80,000 feet. U.S. cancelled the YF-12 program, but it was used in the research program till 1978.

2. SR-71 Blackbird

The SR-71 Blackbird was also developed by Lockheed during 1960s. The project was known as "Black Project" because it was highly classified. It also had a feature to accelerate and destroy surface-to-air missiles after detecting.

The SR-71 Blackbird attained a top-notch speed of Mach 3.3 (more than 2200 mph, or 3,540 km/h) at an altitude of 80,000 feet. The SR-71 made its first flight in December 1964 by U.S. Air Force during 1964 to 1998. SR-71 was termed as the greatest achievements in aviation technology during Cold War.

1. X-15

The X-15 is a rocket-powered experimental aircraft jointly developed by U.S Air Force and NASA. It can reach the edge of space (an altitude of 62 miles, or 100 km). X-15 holds the records for the reaching the fastest speed by any plane: Mach 6.72, approx. 6.72 times the speed of light (4520 mph, or 7274 km/h).

The X-15 program featured many notable NASA and Air Force pilots including Neil Armstrong, who was the first man to step on Moon. Interestingly, during several test programs, 13 flights by eight different pilots reached an altitude above 50 miles, meeting the U.S. Air Forces standard for spaceflight. Thus, U.S. Air Force pilots have been awarded with Air Force astronaut wings and the civilian pilots were honoured by NASA astronaut wings.
